Spironolactone (Antisterone) Description:
Spironolactone and commonly shortened simply to “spiro“) ,marketed mainly under the brand name Aldactone in most countries, is a synthetic, steroidal antimineralocorticoid, antiandrogen, and, to a lesser extent, progestin. It belongs to a class of pharmaceutical drugs known as potassium-sparing diuretics, and is used primarily as a diuretic and antihypertensive in the treatment of heart failure andhypertension. As a secondary use, spironolactone is also frequently employed off-label for the purpose of reducing elevated or unwanted androgen levels and activity in the body, such as in the treatment of hyperandrogenism in women and, especially, as a component of hormone replacement therapy for trans women.
Spironolactone (Antisterone) Application:
Aldactone is known as a “water pill” (potassium-sparing diuretic). It is used to diagnose or treat a condition in which you have too much aldosterone in your body. Aldosterone is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands to help regulate the salt and water balance in your body.
Spironolactone also treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or a kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome. This medication is also used to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood). This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone).
It removes excess fluid from the body incongestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease. It can also be used in combination with other drugs to treat elevated blood pressure and for treating diuretic-induced low potassium (hypokalemia). It is also aldactoneused to counteract the effects of excessive adrenal aldosterone production (hyperaldosteronism). Aldosterone overproduction can occur from a tumor in the adrenal gland or enlarged adrenal glands (hyperplasia of the adrenal glands).
It is also used in combination with other medicines to treat precocious puberty (a condition causing children to enter puberty too soon, resulting in the development of sexual characteristics in girls usually younger than 8 years of age and in boys usually younger than 9 years of age) or myasthenia gravis (MG, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness; numbness; loss of muscle coordination; and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Spironolactone also may be used to treat certain female patients with abnormal facial hair.
It controls high blood pressure, edema, heart failure, and hyperaldosteronism, but does not cure these conditions. It may take about 2 weeks or longer before the full effect of spironolactone occurs. Continue to take spironolactone even if you feel well.
